Are there lessons to learn from the U.K. election for Singaporeans?

Yes, elections can bring about seismic change in politics. From being written off as the second political force in British politics just four years ago, Labour electoral victory is historic.
Labour won because the British people are tired of the Conservative politicians sense of entitlement, cronyism, and partly class. When Rishi Sunak claimed he too suffered deprivation while growing up, he gave the example of not have Sky TV!
Such a seismic change would not be conceivable without a just and fair election here even though the system can certainly be fairer.
Unlike Singapore, the ruling Conservative Party in Britain for example, did not have leverage over the Police to execute selective prosecutions; or manipulate the judiciary to rule to its advantage.
Although public inquiries composition and remit set up by the ruling party in the U.K. were often designed to protect the Establishment and ruling party, a free press, truly free civil society and the freedom of information law often lead to exposures of recent and historic injustices meted out by these bodies, and courts.
In fact it was due to the above factors that weakened the ruling Conservative Party in the past few years. Boris Johnston as PM, and even Rashid Sunak as Chancellor were exposed for breaking the law and lying; while Liz Truss, another Conservative PM for 45 days was exposed by independent economists and institutions for bankrupting the country with her mini-budget.
While acres were written to expose the inadequacies and lies of the power that be, none had to worry about being charged for libel. Politicians are expected to be thick skin. Freedom of speech includes having rights to get some facts wrong. This is an alien concept in Singapore.
So to enjoy fair and justice election, Singaporeans need to vote for CHANGE, the single word slogan of Labour at this election.

英国大选给新加坡人的启示

是的。选举可以带来政治上的巨变。工党在4年前被人视为是英国第二势力的政党。工党在英国2024年7月5日取得了历史性的胜利。
工党之所以能够取得本届英国大选压倒性的胜利是由于英国选民已经对保守党的政客们权利意识、朋党意识和部分阶级意识感到厌倦。当幸纳克（前英国首相，Rishi Sunak）想选民申诉自己的成长过程中没有星空电视的例子。
尽管没有更加公平与公正的选举制度，但在这样的制度下却能够取得这样的胜利。当然，这个选举制度可以更加公平。
与新加坡执政党不一样。例如，英国的当政保守党并没有向警方施加压力选择性的对（这种异议分子）进行选择性的起诉；或者，操纵司法做出对自己有利达裁决。
在英国，执政党设立的调查庭确定了其组成与职权范围，其设立目的是为了保护体制和执政党。但在新闻自由、真正的自由公民社会和资讯自由法令下，经常会导致他们的机构和法院被暴露那些最近发生的和历史上的不正义事件。
事实上，由于上述的各种因素，过去几年削弱了保守党的势力。
从鲍里斯·约翰斯顿（Boris Johnston）担任首相开始，到幸纳克（Rashid Sunak）担任校长都被暴露破坏法律和撒谎。担任了45天的首相利兹·特拉斯（Liz Truss）就是被独立的经济学家和机构暴露了她的所谓‘迷你经济预算’将导致国家经济的破产。
在英国，虽然有许多人在撰写文章暴露当权者的无能和谎言，但是，没有人会担心会被执政当局提起诉讼。人民期盼政客们都是厚脸皮的。言论自由的释义是包括了对某些发生的事实做出错误的陈述。对于新加坡而言，这是一个陌生的概念。
因此，为了享有一个公平和正义的选举，新加坡人民需要支持一个提出‘改变’(CHANGE) 的口号。这个口号是本届英国大选提出的口号。
