五一三 FIVE-ONE-THREE
TAN WAH-PIOW
How many Singaporeans know that the date “5.13” was seared into the collective memory of the Chinese educated 70 years ago?
On 13 May 1954, British colonialists attacked protesting middle school students who refused conscriptions. They refused to serve as canon folders for their foreign masters.
I shall leave that part of history to our historian PJ Thum to explain on Saturday at a talk in London.
Student protests in Singapore were epoch-making events. They occurred in 1954 and 1974. It’s quiet now, a pause, but for how long?
In Western capitals, 1968 anti-Vietnam war demonstrations and campus occupations were the epoch-making moments for their intellectuals. Globally it branded USA as the country people love to hate.
After a very long pause… the USA managed to rebrand itself as the champion of democracy. But now, US support for Israel’s war against the Palestinians has reignited students' passion for justice for the Palestinians. In 1968 it was for the Vietnamese.
Current TV news of students occupying US, London, and Paris campuses reminds the 5.13 generation of their courageous involvement in the struggle for independence in Singapore. As makers of history, they are politically disenfranchised, often condemned by the ruling party as troublemakers and rioters. Remnants of the 5.13 generation, now in their late 80s and 90s, are mostly too frail and disenfranchised to commemorate the 70th anniversary of their movements. They are an endangered political species.
If the newly minted Prine Minister Lawrence Wong has any sense of history and political imagination, he could use his coronation to pay tribute to this 5.13 generation who are the real pioneers of Singapore's political history. Of course, there is the Senior Minister he needs to consult.
If the passion for justice in the Western capitals breaches the Singapore political firewall, we may even be able to achieve a world-class first: Occupation of the Community Centres for history teach-ins by the 5.13 generation and ‘revisionist’ historians.
